AI project management is the discipline of leading AI deployment inside organizations — and demand for people who can do it is outrunning supply. The market signal is hard to miss: postings for forward-deployed engineers, the vendor-side version of AI deployment talent, grew more than 1,000% in a year at $300,000–$550,000. Until September 2026, there was no formal, paid pathway into the organization-side role. Now there is: on September 8, 2026, Maryland registered the first Registered Apprenticeship in the United States dedicated to AI project management. What does an AI project manager do?

An AI project manager leads AI deployment at the point where it actually succeeds or fails: where an AI application meets a real organization — its data, workflows, people, and governance. MIT researchers found that 95% of enterprise generative-AI pilots produce no measurable P&L return, and RAND found the leading root causes of AI project failure are organizational rather than technical. The AI PM is the answer to that finding: a person on the organization’s own payroll accountable for deployment across every vendor and every model type — not building the models, but making them land.

The established path: project management experience plus AI fluency

Most people doing this work today got there sideways: years in project or program management roles, foundational credentials such as CAPM and PMP, then self-directed AI upskilling layered on top — courses, certificates, and whatever deployment exposure their employer’s AI initiatives offered. The path works, but it has two structural problems: it is slow, and it is self-funded. You pay for the training, and you wait for the experience.

The new path: the registered AI project management apprenticeship

The apprenticeship inverts both problems. Registered as MATC Program #2575 by the Maryland Apprenticeship and Training Council — and announced via Business Wire as the nation’s first — it is a two-year, earn-and-learn program in which apprentices are full-time W-2 employees of participating employers from day one. Over the term, apprentices complete 4,000 hours of mentored on-the-job learning across eleven registered work processes — including a dedicated AI System Integration & Governance work process — plus 340 hours of related instruction, 219 of them AI-specific, anchored to PMBOK 8.

The credential outcome is stacked: CAPM, PMP, an AI Specialization Certificate, and the nationally recognized Certificate of Completion issued through the Registered Apprenticeship system. And the cost structure is the opposite of the self-funded path: apprentices bear no cost for the program — no tuition, no fees. You are paid to become an AI project manager, with the Maryland Department of Labor publicly welcoming the program into the state’s Registered Apprenticeship community.

How to get into the AI project management apprenticeship

Here is the structural fact to understand first: a Registered Apprenticeship is a job, not a course. Employers join the program; individuals participate through an employer. That means there is no direct-enrollment button — and it also means the way in is more concrete than an application portal. Three moves, in order of leverage:

Join the candidate interest list at com/p/aipmapprenticeship, so you are visible as participating employers open apprentice seats.
Bring the program to your current employer. Forward the program page to your manager, HR, or whoever owns AI initiatives. The person who champions the apprenticeship inside a company is well positioned to be among its first apprentices — and employers can review exactly how joining works on the program page.
Watch for openings at participating employers. As companies join, apprentice roles are hired like any other position — full-time, W-2, from day one.
